Theme: WHO DO YOU FEAR?
Text: Matthew 8:18, 28-34
HYMN: EMHB 783- Shall I, for fear of feeble man, the Spirit’s course to me restrain
Memory Verse: Matthew 10:28 “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”
The claims of Jesus Christ are continually questioned and tested right from the virgin birth through the earthly ministry till this very day. But He always stood by His claims eternally. One of such lofty claims is His authority which is from God, “My Father has entrusted everything to Me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.” (Matt. 11:27 NLT; ref. Matt. 28:18).
Our text shows how Jesus Christ crossed the Sea of Galilee to the region of the Gadarenes and met two-demon possessed men that dwelt in the tombs. They were possessed of fierce and violent spirit that no one could chain. However, on sighting the Lord the demons cried out in fear, “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” (Matt. 8:29 NIV). In fact, they begged the Lord to send them into a nearby large herd of pigs. The simple order from the King of Kings was ‘Go’ and they had no choice. And the pigs were exchanged for the men who were delivered.
So, who do you fear? Who do I fear? Jesus Christ is God -the second in the God-head and vested with authority to save and deliver, and to destroy as well. The Lord again claims, ‘I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades’ (Rev. 1:18 NIV). The winds and waves obey Him, the demons tremble before Him, even death bows to Him. So, all your troubles and troublers will bow before Jesus if only you have faith and call upon Him.
Prayer: By the Name of Jesus Christ, I cast off every fear. Amen.
