Rejoice always in the Lord

TEXT: EPHESIANS 5: 19 – 20

HYMN: EMHB 525 Through the love of – God our Saviour, all will be well

The Bible reading for today and, indeed, the theme all point us to the direction of living lives of unending thanks/praises to God. But as the theme “Rejoice in the Lord” suggests, to be able to rejoice in the Lord, one must abide in or have an enduring cordial relationship with the Lord. In fact, there are reasons to rejoice which are only circumstantial but cannot endure in the face of ups and downs we are daily confronted with in this world of turbulence and uncertainty.

As reflected in Psalm 34: 1, David’s resolve to always praise God at all times was based on his experience of God and God’s act of salvation. Ephesians 2: 19 – 20 encourage the church at Ephesus to make it their habit “speaking to one another in Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making music in their hearts to the Lord, always giving thanks to God, the Father, for each other in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

For this to become their habit, it should not only be an activity but to be part of their being. It should be inherently embodied in them, as well as in all true believers.
The Hymn EMHB 525, part of stanza 3, says “We expect a bright tomorrow: all will be well; faith can sing through days of sorrow; all, all is well:” For Paul and Silas to sing courageously while being imprisoned shows that it was not just an accidental activity to them but part of their everyday lives, (Acts 16: 25).

MEMORY VERSE: Psalm 34: 1 “I will praise the Lord at all times: my mouth will continually praise Him”.

PRAYER: Gracious Lord, I receive Your grace to live a life of unending praise to You. Also endow me with Your blessings to bless others in Jesus’ name. Amen
