Theme: LIVING BY THE WORD
Text: Matthew 4:1-11
HYMN: EMHB 310 – When quiet in my house I sit, Thy word be my companion still
Memory Verse: Matthew 4:4 “Jesus answered, it is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every Word that comes from the mouth of God'”. (NIV)
In this story about temptation of the Lord Jesus Christ in the wilderness, we have before us a typical and practical example of how to live by the Word of God. Most temptations come through the mind and word expression. Similarly, victory over temptations is achieved through the mind and by word expression. But word can become an empty boast if it lacks authority behind it.
No authority is comparable with that of YAHWEH the ‘I AM THAT I AM’ whatsoever and the Word of His mouth cannot be any less. So when you know and understand the power that is in the Word of God, you will not joke with it. God created the heavens and the earth by the power of the Word, ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made’ (John 1:1-3; ref. John 1:14-18 RSV). By the same Word the Lord sustains His creation. Hebrews 1:3 NKJV.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, being God’s Word personified, taught that the best way to live is by the Word of God. At the inauguration of Joshua, the son of Nun, as successor to Moses, God gave him the key to a successful and prosperous living and success in leadership, ‘Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful’ (Joshua 1:8 NIV). So, if you desire to live well to the glory of God throughout this New Year, 2017, and for eternity, do not let the Word of God be out of your heart or disappear from your mouth. Rather, let the Word dwell in you richly, believe it, live it, speak it confess and use it every time. You will be amazed how prosperous you will be!
Prayer: Yes, make Your Word sweet to my soul and life, Lord Jesus. Amen.
