Theme: The Proper Attire
Text: Matthew 22: 1-14
EMHB: 516- When we walk with the Lord
Memory Verse: Matthew 22:14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.”
The parable has three groups of characters: (I) the king and his son (II) the first set of invited guests who spurned the invitation with lame excuses and abuse of the servants, and ( III) the second category of guests who unexpectedly received the invitation.
Turing down an invitation at a point when one has already made a commitment to attend, will be a great insult to the host and here, a King. The second invitation was met not just with refusal but also with rather contemptuous treatment of the servants.
Apparently, wedding guests, then as today, usually do their best to dress appropriately. But it appears that one of his guests at the King’s wedding made no attempt to be well dressed. His clothes were completely inappropriate for a wedding. (Vs 11-12). Consequently, he was thrown out of the party.
Although the invitation was free, the individual guests was not free to flout the rules of hospitality. The salvation of God in Christ is offered freely but once in the kingdom of God, people need to behave appropriately. Those who presume on God’s grace without truly honouring His Son will be banished into the darkness where there will be wepping and gnashing of teeth (Mt 22:13; 13:42; 24:51; and 25:30)
PRAYER: Lord, keep me pure within and without. .Amen.
