THEME: RESIST THE DEVIL
TEXT: 1 PETER 5:6-9
HYMN: EMHB 367 Day after day I sought the Lord
God and the Devil are two unparalleled entities who share nothing in common. God is good, righteous, loving, truthful, etc., while the devil is the chief spirit of evil, the adversary of God, the master of hell, the prince of the air, etc, is the author of sin, murder and wickedness.
At creation, everything God made was very good until Eve permitted the devil, who engaged her in interrogation that led to the fall of man. Since then, enmity was established between man and the devil. No descendant of Adam and Eve should have anything to do with the devil. Sinners are of the devil while the children of God are in constant spiritual warfare against him. (1John 3:8.) Apostle Peter in our text calls on children of God to be at alert at every moment against the one who prowls around their vicinity, looking for who to devour.
Many are the children of God that have fallen into the trap of the devil as a result of little chance given to the devil. The only enemy the children of God have is the devil. A man becomes an enemy of his fellow man when he is possessed by the devil.
Apostle Peter urges every Christian to:
• Resist the devil through ceaseless prayer using the Word of God and this Apostle James affirms in James 4:7. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. The same thing was what Jesus did in Matthew 4:10 when the devil came to tempt him, “Be gone Satan…..” He said and the devil left him.
• Stand firm in the faith. If one must overcome the devil, he must be strong in faith with which we can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one (the devil).
God has given us authority to triumph over Satan. The devil is a deceiver and attacker; don’t permit him to savage your life. Through Jesus Christ we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37-39).
MEMORY VERSE: 1Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant because your adversary, the devil, walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.”
PRAYER: My Lord and my God, empower me against all devices of the devil in Jesus’ name.
