THEME: BEING CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST
TEXT: GALATIANS 2:19-21
HYMN: EMHB 390 – There is a fountain filled with blood
In chapter 1 of his Epistle to the Galatians, Apostle Paul tells his readers how he was converted and how he received the gospel directly from Jesus Christ by revelation and none else. He also clears the controversy that after his conversion and restoration of his sight in Damascus, he went to Jerusalem to see the apostles there. He said he never visited Jerusalem until 3 years after his conversion, having stayed in Arabia and Damascus. He also added that nobody taught him about the gospel he preaches; it was only by divine revelation.
He revealed that he confronted Peter “to his face” when he, Peter, out of fear, separated himself from the gentiles after earlier eating with them. The Church elders in Jerusalem, after being briefed by Paul of the doctrine he preached to the gentiles, also approved the doctrine.
In the text, Paul said that in order “to live unto God” believers should die or be crucified with Christ, being dead to the law, adding that Christ should live in us. He said that Christ would have died in vain if righteousness were to be measured by the law. Like Paul, we should not render useless the grace of God given to us.
Jesus Christ is the basis for our faith; He is the reason for our faith. The Scripture admonishes us to abound in faith. 2Cor. 8:7 – says “Therefore as you abound in everything in faith and utterance, and knowledge and in all diligence and in your love to us, see that you abound in this grace also.”
We should grow in faith on a daily basis. The strength of our faith is not in the Law but in Jesus Christ who paid the ultimate sacrifice. We must demonstrate our faith in words and in action. We must not be deterred by the affairs of the world that may drive our attention from Jesus Christ. Let us commit our hearts absolutely to God and God alone. May God’s grace be with you as you set out in all your endeavours this morning.
MEMORY VERSE: Gal. 3:23 “But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the Law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed.”
PRAYER: God, give me the zeal to be crucified with Jesus and the grace to constantly stay in Your presence evermore through Christ our Lord. Amen.
