Devotional: All Inclusive Power

TEXT: JOHN 17:1-26
HYMN: EMHB 478 Jesus, my Saviour, Brother, Friend
In today’s text (John 17), Jesus prayed on diverse items when the “hour has come”. He prayed concerning eternal life (2 & 3); prayed for the return of His original glory (v. 5); prayed for oneness of all believers (vs 9-11); prayed for the safety of believers (v. 15); prayed to set believers apart (vs 17, 18 & 19) just as Paul and Barnabas were set apart in Acts 13; prayed for people who will be converted (believers in future (vs 20-23) and prayed to glorify all believers (vs24-26). How do you pray? Do you pray for others, for the success of the ministry and the gospel, your enemy and the nation? Jesus, in our text today gives us an example of how to pray apart from the regular and popular “Lord’s prayer”.
However, one of the greatest desires of Jesus is that His disciples should be safe and protected from their enemies.  Jesus equally prayed that they be united.  The unity and safety of the disciples were very paramount to Jesus. Do you pray for the safety of others? Jesus perceived a situation in which division might arise among the disciples of Jesus and He prayed fervently for the unity of the Church.
The fear Jesus expresses is here with us today, 2,000 years after His earthly ministry.  Today, doctrinal differences and the greed for leadership have put the Church asunder.  The gospel has been weakened by our individual greed and personal ego.  We have abandoned the gospel and we now pursue our own selfish ambitions.  May God deliver us from the power of self-will.  Let us pray for the unity of the Church.  Let us seek God with a clean heart and worship Him in the beauty of His holiness
MEMORY VERSE: John 17: 14 “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am that they may behold My glory which You have given Me.  For You loved Me before the foundation of the world”
PRAYER: Fill my heart with Your genuine love.  Break the power of self-will and create within me Your right spirit to intercede for others in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
