THEME: WHAT TOXIC WINE DOES
TEXT: PROVERBS 23:29-35
HYMN: EMHB 366 – Jesus! Redeemer, Saviour, Lord,
Toxic wine or alcoholic wine is both additive and destructive that no sincere Christian should drink. The whole of Scripture is clearly against the consumption of alcohol, but human nature will look for loopholes to justify the drinking of alcohol.
There are many forms of alcohol which sometimes people call “wine”. However, there is no mistaking that all of them are classified as poisonous-toxins to the human body. What happens when one consumes this type of alcohol? Well, death usually occurs if the concentration of ethanol in the blood stream exceeds about five per cent! But even for those who use it sparingly, immediate behavioral changes, impairment of vision and unconsciousness can occur. The word ‘woe’ from our passage means deep distress or misery-as from grief and/or wretchedness. The Bible used the word more than a hundred times (Isaiah 5:11, Habakkuk 2:15, Proverbs 3:29-30, etc). It asks seven great questions about the drunkard in Prov. 23:29 and says “Woe to the drunkards” in Isaiah 5:22. Does the Christian need any more condemnation of alcohol consumption than this?
“For ye are bought with a price: therefore, glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:20 KJV). From liver disease to ulcer to dementia, an almost endless list of health problems has been linked to the drinking of alcohol/wine. (Romans14:21). Considering the effect of toxic wine and the woes, as the Bible says, should any reasonable person indulge in it?
God’s issue with alcohol is clear, and it always has been. Alcohol is unholy and unclean. Partaking in the worldly drink can only compromise God’s high standards. “Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John8:36).
