THURSDAY 21st DECEMBER, 2017 READ – DAY: Luke 16; Night: Zech 1-5
THEME: WATCHFULNESS (2)
TEXT: MATTHEW 25:1-13
HYMN: EMHB 491 – Christian, seek not yet repose;
The parable of the ten Virgins as told in Matthew 25 does not stop to amaze me. One, because it was told by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Two, because the ten virgins all had wedding costumes and were all ready to meet with the bridegroom. Three, because they all had lanterns with some level of oil inside (verse 1). Four, because while the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept (verse 5). When eventually the bridegroom came, they awoke from their slumber, trimmed their lanterns and five of them went in with the bridegroom. But at this time, the lamps of the other five had gone out. Was it their fault that the bridegroom delayed? I could not answer yes or no. The question, however, is: Why was there no ingenuity in their preparation? Nobody told the other five wise virgins to make extra provision for oil but they did because they did not know the exact time the bridegroom would show up.
Beloved in Christ, half-hearted preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ may make Christians to be in the category of the five foolish virgins. There would be many surprises when Jesus comes. In what ways are we to prepare and put on the goggle of watchfulness?
- Full assurance of salvation. Are you born again?
- Daily life of sanctification. Are you doing your best to live a holy life?
- Sensitivity to the instructions, encouragement and rebuke by the Holy Sprit; are you?
- Doing your best daily to bring people to the knowledge of Christ. Are you?
MEMORY VERSE: Mark 13:33 “Take ye heed, watch and pray for ye know not when the time is”.
PRAYER: O Lord, let me always be prepared for Your coming.
