WEDNESDAY 20TH DECEMBER, 2017 READ – DAY: Luke 15; Night: Hagai 1-2
THEME: WATCHFULNESS (1)
TEXT: MARK 13: 31 – 37
HYMN: EMHB 491 – Christian, seek not yet repose
To watch is to be alert, vigilant or on one’s guard. In our text today, Jesus Christ instructs us, regarding His second coming, to take heed, watch, pray and be spiritually alive (Mark 13:33-35).Watching for the Lord’s return does not mean idly speculating about the time of His coming or setting dates that the Father has not revealed. Neither does it give license to neglect family responsibilities and our expected duties in God’s vineyard and to the body of Christ.
Watching and praying, therefore, is for us to continue to seek the will of God for our lives and to do it. It is to pay attention to gospel news. It is for us to continually allow the Holy Spirit to lead us in calling people to repentance and bringing many into His Kingdom. To watch is to be aware of the devices of the devil and to put on the whole armour of God-truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and Word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:10-18).
The Church appears to be moving closer to the day Christ will come. Believers are expected to be on guard and BE WATCHFUL! Even if Jesus doesn’t come in our lifetime, we need to leave for the next generation a witness of having been on duty during our lifetime! When our children look back to take stock of our lives they will see servants of the Lord that hadbeen watching faithfully. They should not see us as adults who were spiritually insensitive and lukewarm. Whatever you do today will become history for others to read.
MEMORY VERSE: Mark 13:33 “Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is.”
PRAYER: Empower me by your Holy Spirit, O Lord, to continue to pray and watch as a faithful disciple.
