FRIDAY 22ND DECEMBER 2017 READ – DAY: Luke 17; Night: Zech 6-9
THEME: VANITY (1)
TEXT: ECCLESIASTES 2: 1 – 11
HYMN: EMHB 437 – My Jesus, I love Thee, I know Thou art mine
“Vanity” is a key word in the book of Ecclesiastes. The author, like many today, was trying to find meaning in life by running after wealth, pleasure, wisdom and fame. However, at the end of the journey, he found nothing but emptiness and vanity (Eccl. 2: 10 – 11). Life without God is meaningless. It is vanity.
The Preacher is speaking to our culture today. The ultimate goal of many people today is to acquire mind-blowing wealth and experience unending pleasure even at the expense of their health, integrity, marriage, children, spiritual life and reputation. According to the Preacher, unprecedented success and wealth do not guarantee happiness. Becoming a billionaire, a celebrity, a great politician, a well-known professor or a rising star in your profession does not guarantee long life, peace nor joy.
This is in line with the word of our Lord Jesus Christ, “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works (Matthew 16:26 – 27).
The reason for Christmas, to many, is Jesus Christ. Success, pleasure, wealth and fame without Jesus Christ is vanity. A life of meaning, purpose, great joy and fulfillment can be yours if you will devote your life to the Lord Jesus Christ and follow Him all your days. Choose today – vanity or eternal life – as the choice is entirely yours.
MEMORY VERSE: Ecclesiastes 1:11 “There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come by those who will come after.”
PRAYER: From the vanity of wealth and pleasure, Lord Jesus Christ, deliver me. Help me to live for your glory alone.
