SATURDAY 23RD DECEMBER, 2017                                                        READ – DAY: Luke 18; Night: Zech 10-14

HYMN:  EMHB 182 – When I survey the wondrous Cross

The popular Juju maestro in the south-western part of Nigeria, Chief Ebenezer Obey, echoed and popularized this word of wisdom so well: “Vanity upon vanity, all is vanity, vanity”. Even some people who have no knowledge of the Bible knew and sang the song!

The imagery of pessimism painted by Ecclesiastes may confuse some vague-minded persons into complacency, looseness and inaction. But if one reads the book with an open mind and devotion, he would see the glory of God and hear Solomon, believed to be the author, saying: ‘GOD IS THE BEGINNING, THE CENTRE AND THE END OF ALL THINGS’. Everything exists in God, and without Him, nothing exists. This is why he concluded the book this way “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. (Eccl: 12:13). This implies that anything outside the fear of God and obedience to His commandments is vanity. Everything we acquire here on earth will end here on earth. But we could be wise through using everything at our disposal to glorify God. The interests thus provided by this act would last beyond this world of vanity.

What is the value of your certificate after you are dead? Vanity. In how many rooms in your house(s) will they put you at burial? Vanity.  Why is it that some people that worked so hard to earn income do not live to spend it? Vanity.  We could continue on and on. The truth is, everything here on earth is vanity. We are not to be lazy though. In the words of John Wesley, we should ”Earn as much as we can, save as much as we can and give as much as we can”. And our eyes must be focused or singled on the fear of God, obedience to His commands and being a blessing to the Kingdom of God.

MEMORY VERSE: Eccl. 2:11 “Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought and on the labour that I had laboured to do and behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under heaven.”

PRAYER: Give me grace, O God, to spend and be spent for You and Your Kingdom and don’t allow me to labour in vain in Jesus’ name. Amen.
