TUESDAY 14TH MARCH, 2017 READ-Day: 1 Cor. 10; Night: Lev. 25
THEME: A PLEASING SACRIFICE
TEXT: HEBREWS 13:15-17
HYMN: EMHB 18 – Let us with a gladsome mind
Christians are to offer sacrifices to God. Among these sacrifices are the sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving. Our sacrifices are meant to please God and not otherwise (Heb.13:15-16).
Cain offered a sacrifice which displeased God and it was rejected. But his brother’s (Abel’s) sacrifice was pleasing and acceptable unto God. In jealousy, Cain murdered his brother Abel (Gen.4:1-8). Abel’s sacrifice was more excellent because he offered by faith (Heb.11:4). Nadab and Abihu offered a sacrifice which displeased God, and they suffered the penalty of death. They offered something the Lord had not commanded them (Lev.16:12). They followed their own counsel instead of the counsel of the Lord.
Now consider the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross; it was an act of obedience to God and thus acceptable for our salvation. We must emulate this in our worship. God’s counsel to us is that our sacrifice of praise should be “the fruit of lips”. In other words, “it is singing and making melody in our hearts to the Lord.” What we see today is a situation where people offer to God that which they cannot boldly give to man. Sometimes money and items that are rejected are found in our church offering boxes. Such gifts are not pleasing to God. God wants us to serve him in truth and in spirit and with our possessions willingly.
Therefore, brethren, I urge you, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God- this is your true and proper worship (Rom.12:1). Another area through which we can offer to God an acceptable sacrifice is by sharing what we have with other less-privileged people. Extend your gifts to people in need today and consider your action as pleasing to God.
MEMORY VERSE: Hebrews 13:15 “Through Him let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge His name.”
PRAYER: Father, grant that my offerings, sacrifices and gifts to You and for Your service be acceptable and pleasing in Your sight through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen.
