TEXT: ECCLESIASTES 11:9-10; 12:1-6
HYMN: EMHB 396 – Lord, in the fullness of my might,
To be a youth is to possess the qualities or be in a state of being young, agile with vigor and vitality. The days of one’s youth are very crucial because they determine how well one’s adulthood will be. One often hears many young people say “It doesn’t matter what I do with my youthful days”. Or “We are in the new generation”. Listen, what you do when you are young does matter. Life is good to enjoy, but life is full of evil. The mundane things can distract you from serving God. Enjoy life now, but don’t do anything physically, morally, or spiritually to prevent you from enjoying life when you are old and even hereafter. The passage can be viewed as a warning or an instruction to the youth, especially when they feel that they have “arrived”.
Young people should not waste their youthful life on foolish living such as drunkenness, prostitution, cheating, stealing, cyber-crimes, homosexualism, lesbianism, etc. As a young fellow, live your life in a manner that is controlled by the fact that you know that you will give an account of all your deeds. 2 Cor. 5:10 says “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad”. Let God start your life for you through serious study of God’s Word. Psa. 119:9 says “How will a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your Word”.
Furthermore, as a youth, build up your faith in Christ, and avoid being unequally yoked with unbelievers so that when you become old you will not regret your youthful days.
Many young ones in the Bible walked with God and God used them mightily unto His glory. Jeremiah was called at a tender age (Jer. 1:1ff) to be a Prophet. David was anointed a King at a tender age. Josiah, one of Israel’s best Kings, was made a king at the age of eight years. Jesus Christ started teaching in the temple at the age of twelve. You should be like Jesus Christ and other good leaders in the Bible. Strike the iron while it is hot. Give your life to the service of God. Live a life in the community, such that you will be emulated.
