THURSDAY 16TH MARCH, 2017 READ-Day: 1 Cor. 12-13; Night: Num 1-2
THEME: FERVENT PRAYER
TEXT: JAMES 5:13-18
HYMN: EMHB 539 – Lord, teach us how to pray aright
Prayer is the channel through which human beings can talk to God and obtain things from Him. The reason we lack anything in life is due to our neglect of prayer of faith. Elijah was a man like any other man. Though a Prophet, he was an ordinary man with faith in God as any Christian. Elijah earnestly prayed to God for restoration of Israel and his request was granted. (1 Kg. 17:1-18:45)
Many Christians are asking, “Why is it that my progress is little?” “Neglect of earnest prayer” is the reason. Prayer is to sincerely ask, not just asking for asking sake. Jesus Christ says in Matt. 7:7: “Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be open to you. For everyone who asks receives, the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”
Many Ministers of God are asking: “Why is it that I see so little fruit from my labour?” Again, God answers: “Your neglect of prayer. You do not have because you do not ask”.
The emphasis in our text is the word “fervent”. Elijah made one fervent prayer that describes the way we should pray to God in faith. He prayed that there should be no rain. The result of that one fervent prayer was that God stopped the rain for three-and-a-half years. He did not make any repetitious request to God. The power of prayer is also based on the righteous living of the individual who makes the prayer in faith. There is power in that downright earnest prayer, and there is always urgency on God’s part to respond to the prayer of a righteous man who believes in Him. James 5:16b says “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
Let us be imitators of Jesus Christ. He started His Ministry with prayer and ended it with prayer on the Cross, saying “Father forgive them for they know not what they are doing…”
MEMORY VERSE: James 5:17 “Elijah was a man of like nature with ourselves, and he prayed fervent that it might not rain for three years and six months.”
PRAYER: O Lord, put on me Your garment of righteousness and grant me grace to pray aright and with fervency in Jesus’ name. Amen.
