SATURDAY 7TH OCTOBER, 2017 READ – DAY: Philemon; Night: Isaiah 51-53
THEME: THE YOKE OF JESUS
TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 3:7-11
HYMN: EMHB 746 – I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice
When two people agree to marry each other, both of them agreed also to share in the joys and pains of being husband and wife. Hence, without agreeing to accept one another as they both were, the marriage can never be successful. Therefore, as a follow up to this agreement, the two must give up certain things to enable them accommodate the new life they found themselves in. Amos 3:3 says “Can two walk together unless they are agreed?”
Apostle Paul knew this and so he said for him to be better in this new life in Christ, all those things that were formerly important to him are now worthless. He also said that nothing is worth comparing with the joy and greatness of knowing Christ Jesus. For this reason, he wrote, in verse 8b, “I lost all things, and now I know that they are all worthless trash. Losing all for Christ is a yoke and the greater yoke in Christ is to know Him”.
Paul did not just desire to know Christ but to partake in His suffering as well. What he is saying here is that he needed the grace that would enrich him to be like Christ, that is, shining like Christ and also accepting to suffer like Christ if the need arose. Like Paul, let us all desire to put on the life of Christ so that we can suffer what He suffered and gain what He gained.
MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 11:29 “Accept My teaching. Learn from Me. I am gentle and humble in spirit. And you will be able to get some rest”.
PRAYER: O Lord, though Your yoke may be easy unless You give me the strength I cannot successfully carry it. So give me the grace that will enable me to bear my yoke and the yoke of fellow Christians in Christ Jesus’ name. Amen.
