WEDNESDAY 9TH AUGUST, 2017 READ – DAY: Act 23; Night: Prv 10-11
THEME: THE GOODNESS OF GOD
TEXT: ROMANS 2:1 – 10
HYMN: EMHB 968- Yes, God is good – in earth and sky.
The goodness of God is not only an attribute of God but also a foundational truth every Christian should embrace. Consider some of the reasons God’s goodness is important to us: In His goodness to mankind He gave both the just and the unjust rain, sun, air, etc for our use. He did not differentiate nor discriminate between the white and the black. The LORD gives grace and glory; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly. (Psalm 84:11)
It is out of His goodness He concluded that it is not good for man to be alone and gave him (Adam) a helper. (Genesis 2:18-25). The goodness of God may thus be viewed as one facet of His glorious nature and character and also the overall summation of His nature and character.
According to Psalm 16:2 I said to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” NIV. You cannot have goodness without God, just as you cannot have God without goodness. God alone is good. God is the source of everything that is good; every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of light, with whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow – James 1:17. God does not withhold anything that is truly good from His children.
In conclusion, we simply cannot separate “good” from “God.” This is what our society, and especially our educational system planners should take note of that you cannot teach values and morality without teaching about God. Parents, too, should teach their children the way of the Lord.
MEMORY VERSE: Romans 2:3 – 4 “And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practising such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?”
PRAYER: Almighty God, in Your goodness you made all things for the comfort of human beings. Therefore, show us Your goodness by forgiving every sin we commit and lead us to Your eternal rest for in Jesus name we ask. Amen.
