THEME: THE GOOD PART
TEXT: LUKE 10:38-42
MEMORY VERSE: LUKE 10:42 “But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
It is unfortunate that what God calls the ‘good part’ might not be what many will accept as good. Many today will just like to tell God what they want and not what God will have them do. Jesus paid a visit to Martha’s house. Martha made every effort to be hospitable by preparing something for Jesus to eat but Mary, her sister, sat at Jesus’ feet, listening to His gracious words. Martha felt bad that Mary did not even care to join in the hosting. Of course, what Martha did was good trying to care for Jesus, but Mary’s choice was considered by Jesus to be better. Jesus made it clear in His teaching that spiritual matters are superior to physical ones (Mt. 6:33, Lk. 4:4). Even in the midst of all spiritual cravings, the desire for knowledge and study of God’s Word should be number one. It is so saddening that many Christians today neither study nor practise God’s Word as they crave for prayers. Many can create time to attend twenty-one days of prayer vigils, praise nights, empowerment workshops and so on but never get the time to attend Bible studies. Prayer meetings are packed full to the brim while Bible studies are scanty in attendances.
The worst part is that many men of God have been intimidated into giving the flock what they wanted rather than what God wanted for them. The focus of today’s theme does not mean that we cannot take care of other peoples’ physical needs or attend to other spiritual matters but that our priority should be God’s Word and its observance.
When you pray, you are expecting God to listen and answer you. But when you read and study God’s Word, you study His Word that you are prepared to listen to God and do what He says. God wants us to listen to Him. It is when you listen to God that you’ll be able to know how to pray and do other things according to His will. Give quality time to listening to and studying God’s Word.
HYMN: EMHB 309 – BREAK THOU THE BREAD OF LIFE
PRAYER: Lord God, help me never to relent in my desire for Your Word and grant me the grace to live it faithfully. Amen.
