TUESDAY 23RD MAY, 2017 READ – Day: James 1-2 Night: 1 Sam 14
THEME: THE EVER-PRESENT JESUS
TEXT: MATTHEW 28: 16 – 20
HYMN: EMHB 63 – Eternal depth of love divine
There are four ‘alls’ in this passage of Scripture, and each one is connected with the Great Commission that the Lord Jesus Christ gave His disciples. The first is ‘all authority’. All authority had been given to Christ in heaven and on earth. Christ’s authority was given to the disciples for the purpose of taking the Gospel to the second ‘all’, which is ‘all nations.’ This Gospel involves ‘all things’, the third ‘all’, all things that Christ had commanded His disciples when He was on the earth. The fourth ‘all’ is ‘always’. Christ assured His disciples that as they would go forth in this mission of evangelisation of the world that His presence would go with them always.
Matthew’s gospel started with God’s presence (Matt. 1: 23), Emmanuel, God with us. In the middle (Matt. 18:20), Jesus Christ said, ‘Where two or three are gathered together in My Name, I am there in the midst of them’- God’s presence. At the end (Matt. 28:20), – ‘Lo, I am with you always’. As you go to spread the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ, the ever- present authority of Jesus Christ will go with you.
In times of loneliness, His presence will give you company. In times of weakness, His presence will give you strength. In times of suffering, His presence will give you peace and tranquillity of mind. In times of death, His presence will give you hope and eternity.
MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 28:20 “Teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
PRAYER: Anoint me, O Lord Jesus Christ, to enjoy Your divine presence all the days of my life. Amen.
