THEME: THE DESIGN FOR DISCIPLESHIP
TEXT: LUKE 10:38-42
MEMORY VERSE: Luke 10:41 – 42 “And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
The Israelites are given to hospitality. When a visitor comes in, they offer water for the washing of feet; they prepare food and as well do other things for the comfort of the visitor. Father Abraham and his wife did it for strangers from the throne of God. This was what Martha, too, did to make the visit of Jesus a memorable one for Him. That was the true situation of what happened here. However, like the angels who visited Abraham, Jesus did not come to be served with food; He came to do His Father’s business and to offer what they could not get elsewhere.
Today’s story is very important for all Christians who are in the service of the Lord. In the Church, most of us want to serve but do not have time for the Word of God. Most officers in the Church do not come to worship but to serve like Martha. Some Church Stewards use the time of hearing the sermon to write announcements and do administrative duties. Martha’s approach to serving God will deny us of some things that have eternal value. Whatever we do, we must devote time for hearing and studying the Word of God.
Mary, her sister, sat at the feet of Jesus and was being fed with words of eternal life while Martha was cooking physical food that would perish. Which is more important? The best way of being a disciple of Christ is to first sit at His feet and learn from Him -His words. You must be taught by Him and be truly fed with the words of life. There is no other way to be Christ’s disciple (student) other than seeking knowledge from Him. Your discipleship is hinged on that fact and there is no other way. Sit at His feet and learn. Jesus is the bread of life. Eat it.
HYMN: EMHB 684 – JESUS, STAND AMONG US IN THY RISEN POWER…
PRAYER: Jesus Christ, my Lord and Saviour, feed me with Your bread of life that I hunger no more. Grant me the living water that I thirst no more. Amen.
