FRIDAY 10TH AUGUST, 2018
THEME: THE DANGER OF LOOKING BACK
TEXT: GENESIS 19:17-26
MEMORY VERSE: LUKE 9: 62 “And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God.”
Look not back, flee to the mountains” were the words of the angels to Lot and his family because the Lord was about to destroy the city of Sodom and Gomorrah, cities involved in high level of iniquity and sin. Sodom was known for the terrible acts of sodomy which most people practice today. Their acts cannot be accepted by the Lord any longer and He decided to destroy them all. However, Lot and his family were to be preserved.
On the way out his wife looked back and was transformed into a pillar of salt. Why did she look back? Was it that she wanted to see the destruction and be able to tell what happened to people afterward? Was she thinking of her properties? After all, they had left with nothing. One thing we can deduce is that she was thinking about her possessions and her heart was drawn towards them; she loved the things of the world and was very attached to them. She was offered an opportunity for salvation, but she looked back with nostalgia on the things she was leaving behind. The love of the world has been the reason why so many people today do not stay in the faith. Maybe they weighed the pleasures they would miss against the joy of salvation and still preferred the world. Some even tried to secure their portion with the world while declaring for Christ, only to return at the earliest opportunity.
When you decide for the Lord, do not look back; do not rescind your decision. Go with the Lord and your life shall be saved. Demas and Alexander looked back (2 Tim. 4) and Paul gave them to Satan to deal with them.
