SATURDAY 3RD JUNE, 2017 READ – DAY: 1 John 4-5; Night: Psalm 18-20
THEME: TAME YOUR TONGUE
TEXT: JAMES 3:1-12
HYMN: EMHB 553 – Come, Holy Ghost, all-quickening fire,
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue” says Proverbs 18:21a. It is therefore necessary to tame the tongue. The power of the spoken word is one of the attributes of God which, by His mercies, He decided to share with man at creation. In Genesis 1:26a & 27a, God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He man”.
By the reason of this privilege, we have the power to kill and make alive. Thus, we need to tame the tongue for effective use. However, it is very difficult for one, on his own, to tame the tongue, hence the need of the Holy Ghost. Consider how Scripture describes the tongue, “a small thing which can cause great damage, a flame of fire whose tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. Man has been able to tame every kind of animal but lacks the power to tame the tongue”. We need the power of the Holy Ghost to control the heart so as to tame the tongue, for out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.
The authority of a believer in the tongue becomes very effective only when the tongue is tamed to serve its God-given purpose. Elijah was a man like us who decreed there should be no rain in Israel for a period of three and half years, and it was so (1 Kings 17:1). That could happen, because he tamed his tongue
Have we considered the fact that today Christians make decrees which fail to be fulfilled even when the scripture says we have been given the keys of the Kingdom of heaven and whatsoever we shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven (Matt.16:19)?
May the Almighty God circumcise our life through the taming of our tongues by the power of the Holy Spirit, Amen. Please, allow God to tame your tongue.
MEMORY VERSE: Proverbs 15:4 “A gentle tongue is a tree of life but perverseness in it breaks the Spirit.”
PRAYER: Holy Ghost, enter into my life and be in control of my heart; inspire me at all times to speak only what will bring glory to the Name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
