THURSDAY 4TH MAY, 2017 READ – Day: Mark 9:1-29; Night: Jug 9
THEME: SHALL I SIT HERE?
TEXT: NUMBER 32: 1 – 18
HYMN: EMHB 822 – Onward! Christian soldiers, marching as to war
Prior to Israel’s occupation of the Promised Land, the tribes of Reuben and Gad, because of their much livestock, determined that rather than cross the Jordan and settle in that land, they wanted to remain on the eastern side of the Jordan River and settle there (Numbers 32:1).Moses responded that the request, as it stood, was not fair to the ten tribes. He asked, “Shall your brothers go to war while you yourselves sit here?” (Numbers 32:6).Like the Israelites, we are engaged in a war but a spiritual warfare. It is a war against flesh, sin, satan, and the spiritual forces of wickedness(Ephesians 6:12; 2 Corinthians 10:3-5).
“Shall our brethren go to war while we sit here?” Will I be contented to let others make all the sacrifices and do all the work? Will it be only them, and not me, who labour in the vineyard, who rebuke and encourage, who share and serve with dedication, courage and resolve? How can I be filled with peace, hope, joy, love and confidence if I am willing to sit safely on the other side of the river while others cross over to meet their obligations to the Lord and His kingdom?
When Reuben and Gad realized the effect of sitting while their brethren went to war, they immediately made arrangements to do their part. Let us all, today, realize the same lessons as we serve our King, Jesus, and fight the good fight of faith together, and with other warriors.
MEMORY VERSE: Numbers 32:6 “And Moses said to the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben: ‘Shall your brethren go to war while you sit here?”
PRAYER: Help me, Lord, to continue to love You more and serve you more. Empower me to continue to fight the good fight of faith in Jesus’ name. Amen.
