TUESDAY 14TH NOVEMBER, 2017 READ – DAY: Heb 11; Night: Jer 46-48
THEME: RUN WITH ENDURANCE
TEXT: 2TIMOTHY 2: 1 – 7; HEBREWS 12: 1
HYMN: EMHB 491 – Christian, seek not yet repose;
Endurance is one of the virtues the Holy Spirit endows Christians. It is like a charged battery that supplies power to a vehicle and gives it light when it is dark and makes the driver to reach his/her destination safely.
Paul admonishes Timothy to run the Christian race with endurance. On the way of a Christian, there are obstacles – visible and invisible – that pose threats to him, so that he either backslides or withdraws totally from the race. Paul likens the race to the life of a soldier who has taken the oath of defending his/her nation in the rigours of war. He also compares our Christian race to that of an athlete who has to obey stringent rules during training to win laurels for his country. He cannot attain the goal without endurance. There is no venture that can lead one from grass to grace without endurance. The Christian race is pictured as a long distance race rather than a short sprint and no one can receive the crown unless he/she endures. He also likens the race to a farmer who has great benefits of bountiful harvest at the end of his labours.
Endurance is vital in the circumstance of persecution as a result of one’s faith in office, market place, and community. There are also economic depressions, unfulfilled political promises, betrayal in relationship, disappointment in government from providing social amenities, false prophets and prophecies as well as deception that has become a way of life with us. In the midst of all these, a Christian has to run the race by guiding his/her heart with the Word of God and meditating on it daily. Endurance always ends in joy and it brings elevation (Heb. 12: 2). The witnesses of the heroes and heroines of faith (Hebb.11) are also watching. Therefore, we have to run with endurance to the end.
MEMORY VERSE: Matt. 24: 13 “But he who endures to the end will be saved.”
PRAYER: Lord, grant me the courage and endurance in my Christian race to obtain the eternal crown in Jesus’ name. Amen.
