SATURDAY 4TH NOVEMBER, 2017                                         READ – DAY:  John 18; Night: Jer 21-22

TEXT:     MATTHEW 5: 13 – 16

HYMN: EMHB 461 – O for a closer walk with God

A Savour is a sweet, pleasing aroma which God and man can smell in sacrifice. The word in the Bible is used of the effect of the Christian’s life to his/her neighbour. It is fragrance (magnet) that draws others to God through one’s Christ-like character.

At the beginning of the ministry of Jesus Christ He went up on a mountain and sat down. The disciples came to Him and He taught them the principles they need to imbibe to effect a positive change in the society. Among other things He taught them was the significance of salt and light. Salt is a preservative and for seasoning food. Elisha used salt to sweeten the brackish waters of Jericho (II Kg. 2: 19 – 22). In ancient Israel newborn babies were normally rubbed with salt prior to swaddling (Ezek. 16: 4). Unfortunately salt can lose its savour. Jesus says, “it is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled upon by men.” (Matt. 5: 13).

Light dispels darkness and it signifies the presence of God and His favour. Christ’s disciples are light of the world who should demonstrate the revelation of God’s love manifested in Christ and penetration of that love and light into lives darkened by sin. A Christian has savour when his/her presence in office, market, place of worship, etc, gives glory to God. It is disheartening that some Christians have lost their savour in the pursuit of wealth, power, fame, position, and academic pursuit.  Some preachers have consulted false prophets in order to gain popularity, receive power from Satan to perform miracles. Some have compromised their faith in the face of economic depression and even forsaken fellowship.

Does your savour still remain as of the first time you received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour? Does your first love still wax strong? Do you witness Jesus to your friends who indulge in immorality, cheating, drugs abuse, character assassination, stealing of intellectual property? Remember it is he/she who stands firm to the end that will be saved.

MEMORY VERSE: Matt. 5: 13. “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste how shall it be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot for men.”

PRAYER: Lord, keep me burning in the power of the Holy Spirit and make my life to bring positive change to all people I come contact with everyday in Jesus’ name. Amen.
