TUESDAY 17TH OCTOBER, 2017                                                READ – DAY: John 4; Night: Obadiah 1

HYMN:  EMHB 547 – The thing my God doth hate,

The sovereign God, who created all things, takes delight seeing His children obeying, honouring and pleasing Him always.  So, whenever a child of God does what is wrong, the all-knowing God, in His love and mercy, corrects, rebukes and tries to lead such child back to the right way.  Our God does not take delight in the death of a sinner (Ezek. 18:23, John 3:16).  Since we were created in God image, God’s also expects us to humbly correct and rebuke others in love (Gal. 6:1).

In our devotional Bible passage for today, (Rev. 2:1-7), Jesus Christ, our Redeemer and Saviour, reveals to us how to rebuke in love.  He started by acknowledging, appreciating and commending the good works done by the Ephesians Church (Rev. 2:2-3).  After the commendation, He drew their attention to their error/sin and how they had started well.  Jesus then urged them to repent and warned them of the consequences of rebellion.  He ended the rebuke again with commendation and eternal rewards for steadfastness and faithfulness.

Brethren, Jesus expects us to follow the same principles while rebuking others for the wrong done.  We should not close our eyes to the good qualities in other people when they offend us.  As couples, your principle should be ‘private correction, public commendation’: Do not join those that ridicule or rebuke their spouse in public.  Parents should also learn how to discipline their children in love.  Some parents pronounce terrible curses on their children and also beat them mercilessly like goats.  Such parents should pray to God for forgiveness and ask God for grace and wisdom to rebuke their children in love (Eph. 6:4).

Has God placed you in any position of authority? Endeavour always to rebuke your subordinates in love, because the ‘messenger’ of today can become the ‘manager’ of tomorrow (1 Sam. 2:7-8).  And always remember that you are a product of God’s mercy and love.  So, always follow Christ’s principle while rebuking others.

MEMORY VERSE: Galatians 6:1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.

PRAYER: Gracious Father, let divine love direct me in all my relationship with my neighbours in Jesus’ name.
