TUESDAY 25TH JULY, 2017 READ – DAY: Act 8; Night: 1 Chro 21-22
THEME: PRESSING ON
TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 3:12-16
HYMN: EMHB 620. Who would true valour see?
Ben, the secretary in our typing pool in the bank where I worked, was a serious-minded, hard-working, young man. He spent his lunch-break reading. It did not come as a surprise the day he invited us to his graduation ceremony at the University of Lagos. He had enrolled for the first degree in Accountancy through the distant learning (Part-time) programme. On the merit of the certificate, he was converted to main-line banking and transferred to the Accounts Department. Three years later, he qualified as a chartered accountant and the last time I saw him in the newspapers, he was an Executive Director in a bank.
Ben’s doggedness in the pursuit of his goal has been a source of inspiration to many people. He was never satisfied with any mid-point in his chosen career. He kept pressing on until he got to the peak. Paul was somebody that God used, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to propagate the gospel with power and life. Yet, he could say, ‘Brethren, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what is ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus’ (Philippians 3:13-14)
Do you have self-satisfaction with your station in life? Do you give excuses on why you could not further your education or acquire higher skills than you currently possess? Are you complacent about your current level of spirituality? Are you satisfied with your prayer life and intake of the Word of God? Today, like Paul and Ben, you can press on toward greater heights in both secular and spiritual goals.
MEMORY VERSE: Philippians 3:13 “Brethren, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.”
PRAYER: Thank you Lord for strength and sufficiency that you give me. Help me to press on to fulfil Your will for my life.
