THEME: PRESENTING THE BODY
TEXT: ROMANS 12: 1 – 21
MEMORY VERSE: ROMANS 12: 1 – Therefore, I urge you brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship.
Lawyers will tell you that whatever is attached to the land belongs, legally, to the landowner. It is the same thing with your body – your soul and spirit enclosed in your body belong to whoever to whom you present your body. If you give your body to God, He will control your spirit, mind, will and emotions. These components of man are controlled by the devil if our bodies are presented to him, the Satan.
In Romans 12: 1, Paul urges us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices to God. The Jews were accustomed to the sacrificial system whereby animals were killed as offering as an act of atoning for their sin(s). Paul used this imagery to advocate for a complete surrender of our bodies to God, on a daily basis, to serve the purpose for which animals were killed. He says that “this is your spiritual act of worship.” The animals that were used for sacrifice had no blemish and we are to surrender our bodies, which enclose our spirit and soul, to God without blemish. We can only do this by rejecting the worldly values and allowing the Holy Spirit to renew our minds through the Word of God.
For Christians, presenting our bodies to God is not optional. Jesus Christ has purchased us from the darkness of the slave market of sin to Himself in the marvellous light of His kingdom. Paul warns in 1 Corinthians 6: 15 – 17, “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ Himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with Him in Spirit.”
You can order aright your thoughts, speech, actions, feelings, emotions and attitude by presenting your body to Jesus Christ rather than presenting it to the devil. Decide right. The text for us today is about practical Christian living –things you must do on a daily basis wherever you are. Get used to them.
