THEME: OUR HIGH PRIEST
TEXT: HEBREWS 4:10-16
MEMORY VERSE: HEBREWS 4:15 “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
A priest is a religious leader whose duty it is to stand between God and man, offering up their sacrifices for acceptance. The priest is a man of flesh and blood and because of that he is susceptible to error and sin. Some Jewish priests rob and maltreat those who bring offerings to the Temple. Remember the sons of Eli who insisted on charging worshipers above all that was required (I Sam. 2:12-17). They were even accused of sexually abusing women right at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation (I Sam. 2:22).
Even many of today’s priests are worse than the sons of Eli. Many are acquiring wealth at the expense of the flock. Some sleep around with female members, while some misappropriate church funds for their personal gain. The many atrocities of some of today’s priests have left many a sheep without shepherds.
However, Jesus Christ, being our High Priest , marks a clear distinction because He laid down His life for the sheep. While on earth, He was tempted in all areas of life yet without a spot of sin. Imagine a High Priest pleading for mercy for those who crucified Him.
Our High Priest came as a Teacher. He taught His disciples to witness of Him in all the earth. It is therefore a ministry of ‘train the trainer’. Verse 16 of our text admonishes us to come boldly to the throne of grace, that we might find grace to help in time of need. People are wallowing in the dark maze of this world and need those who can lead them to the Light. Let us therefore connect with our High Priest who is willing to empower us to rescue the perishing and keep ourselves faithful to the end.
HYMN: EMHB 338 – RESCUE THE PERISHING, CARE FOR THE DYING.
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, You are my High Priest; please intercede on my behalf before the Father for my justification. Amen. 11
