THURSDAY 29TH MARCH, 2018 (MAUNDY THURSDAY)
THEME: OPEN MESSAGE
TEXT: JOHN 16:16-33
MEMORY VERSE: JOHN 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart I have overcome the world.”
Today’s devotional text can be taken as part of Jesus’ farewell address, as a leader, to His lieutenants. It is quite appropriate today being Maundy Thursday; the day Jesus celebrated the last Supper with His disciples in preparation for crucifixion the next day. Jesus Christ had been with His disciples for more than three years, teaching them and performing miracles in their sight. He did not mince words. He told them the plain truth – I am going soon. In other words, He was asking them to brace up. An adage says “If our togetherness is sweet, our parting will be bitter.” The disciples were sad when they heard about the impending departure of their Leader – Jesus Christ.
It is good to consider how soon our seasons of grace are to end, that we may speedily improve on them. The Gospel according to Matthew Chapters 24, 25 and 26 say much about the persecutions and afflictions that would come to the disciples after Jesus’ departure. John, in his book, says their sorrow would end in joy. Similarly, sorrow is also coming to the ungodly when Christ reappears. Nothing would assuage or lessen their sorrow because it would be eternal.
The following points are clear in this passage:
* As Jesus spoke in plain language to the disciples of old, He speaks to us today in the power of the Holy Spirit.
* As Jesus showed the love of the Father to His disciples, and they were loved by the Father because they loved Christ, Christians today are loved by Father God in as much as they love Christ.
* With Jesus’ departure, Holy Spirit will be ministering among Christians as He leads them to the truth.
* Peace will reign at the end because through Christ we have peace with God, and so in Him we have peace in our own minds.
But whoever thinks he/she stands, let him/her take heed lest he/she falls (1 Corinthians 10:12). Jesus Christ’s abiding presence is always with us to the end of age.
