WEDNESDAY 1ST NOVEMBER, 2017 READ – DAY: John 15; Night: Jer 12-14
THEME: OBEDIENCE LEADS TO GREATNESS
TEXT: GENESIS 26: 1- 11
HYMN: EMHB 516 – When we walk with the Lord, in the light of His word
Everyone desires to be great in life but challenges of life at times pose hindrance. Life’s challenges are not hidden from God. As a matter of fact, before they happen He knows and even the way out of them. Isaac was moving to greatness in Palestine when the challenge of famine arose as a hindrance to his dream. He moved to Gerar, the land of the Philistines, where Abimelech was king. God spoke to him with a definite instruction “Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell you. Sojourn in this land and I will bless you…” (Gen. 26: 2 – 3). Isaac obeyed God and lived in Gerar. His obedience led to his greatness there in three ways:
- God reaffirmed the covenant made to Abraham his father to him.
- God built a hedge around him and caused Abimelech to make a decree of security over him and his wife.
- Isaac became a person to be reckoned with in a foreign land.
There is a popular saying that obedience is the first and last order in heaven. People face economic recession just like the famine that occurred in the time of Isaac in Palestine. The motive of life’s challenges is to obstruct greatness. The antidote against this is obedience. If you can attentively listen and hear the voice of God through your Pastor, personal mediation in the Bible and obey what God tells you, greatness is at your door. Remember that no athlete or footballer attains greatness by winning a medal without strict obedience to the rules of the game. The Bible says, “Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams” (1 Sam. 15: 22).
The road that leads to greatness in ministry, business, academic, excellence, marriage, etc, is obedience to God Almighty.
MEMORY VERSE: Job 8: 9 “For we are but yesterday, and know nothing, for our days on earth are a shadow.”
PRAYER: Lord, give me a heart of obedience to Your Word to attain greatness that I desire in life, through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.
