THEME: NO SORROW ATTACHED
TEXT: JAMES 1:1-18
MEMORY VERSE: James 1:17 “Every good endowment and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
James, the half-brother of Jesus, in this epistle, encourages the Jews scattered abroad as a result of persecution, to count it all joy when they fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of their faith produces patience. I believe he is talking to us, too. God’s gift is something bestowed voluntarily. Gift is something received without payment. God only gives us good gifts we do not merit. We should therefore know that whatever good gifts we have are given to us by God, and not as a result of our works or ‘goodness’.
The world and Satan can promise us good gifts but may not last long or be durable. Our parents and relations can also promise us good gifts but they may not last long. It is only God who gives everlasting gifts because every good and perfect gift comes from Him. We sometimes measure gifts by their importance and value to us, but any gift received outside God has no eternal value. Be careful not to be a victim. The devil took Jesus to a high mountain and showed Him the kingdoms of the world and their glory; that was a beautiful gift, wasn’t it? But remember what the devil had in mind was to destroy the ministry of Jesus. The devil, being the master counterfeiter, will present gifts that may appear the best. When that happens, we must be alert to detect the schemes of the devil. Don’t be deceived. Nothing given by the devil is free; it does not last, too.
We must also realize that God’s gifts are more precious than all the material blessings that are commonly sought after by men, such as property, cars, large bank accounts, etc. However, we must be careful not to yield to tempting offers. According to verses 14 and 15, yielding to tempting offers, no matter how well and desirable they may seem to be, will only bring sin and death to us in the end.

PRAYER: Gracious Father, grant that Your perfect gifts, which bring no sorrow, locate all Christian believers this day and forever in Jesus’ name. Amen.
