THURSDAY 20TH JULY, 2017 READ – DAY: Act 3; Night: 1 Chro 10-11
THEME: LIFE WORTHY OF YOUR CALLING
TEXT: EPHESIANS 4:1-6
HYMN: EMHB157 – Jesus calls us! O’er the tumult
Recounting an incident with her boss, Agnes told me that the most painful part was when her boss, in annoyance, told her “and you call yourself a Christian.” To her, it was the worst insult that any Christian can receive. Every profession has its code of conduct which members are expected to uphold. Any deviation from the code brings disrepute, not only to the erring member, but also to the whole professional body.
In Chapter 4 of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he emphasizes the need for unity in the body of Christ. He points out that the unity is to be kept, not through human efforts or organizations, but by leading “a life worthy of the calling” to which they have been called. Ephesians 4:2 lists four virtues that we should embrace to help us in this quest; humility (lowliness), gentleness (meekness), patience, and forbearance.
Unity is maintained in the body of Christ when everyone thinks more highly of others, when we relate with one another with mildness and tenderness, when we bear trials without grumbling and when we display good-natured tolerance to the shortcoming of others or choose to ignore offences and pardon those who offend us.
These are the values that will make the world know that we belong to the body of Christ.
MEMORY VERSE: Ephesians 4:1 “I, therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called.”
PRAYER: Lord, help me by Your Spirit to lead a life that is pleasing and acceptable in Your sight.
