Daily Reflection: HOLD FAST TO IT- Thursday 19th July, 2018

THURSDAY 19TH JULY, 2018
THEME: HOLD FAST TO IT
TEXT: HEBREWS 10:19-31
MEMORY VERSE: HEBREWS 10:23 – Let us hold fast the confession of
our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.
Eighty and six years have I served Him and He has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my King and my Saviour.” That was the answer given by Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, when threatened with execution by the Roman authority and urged to denounce Christ. He died, bound at the stake and stabbed when the fire failed to touch him.

In our text, the writer of Hebrews urges Christians to hold fast to this kind of conviction and confession. Many professed Christians but denounce Christ in many ways. Our reaction, when we feel slighted, when our ego is bruised, when we feel offended, betrays our claim of Christianity and underscores our immaturity. Why do Christians, who get appointed into positions of authority and influence, all of a sudden become embroiled in corruption? Why are we known to be Christians in our church but not in our schools and work places? The answer lies in the state of our hearts as a worshipper. We are urged, therefore, in our relationship with God to “draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” A Christian is a new creature, justified by the atoning sacrifice of Christ and sanctified by the truth of the Word of God.

Apostle Paul, like Polycarp, was not with Jesus during His earthly ministry. He is credited with writing nearly half of the books in the New Testament. In 1 Corinthians 15: 1-3, he wrote, “Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that Word which I preached to you – unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures.” Paul also held this conviction until he was executed. Regardless of what you are passing through at this time, hold fast to your confession of hope of the future consummation of your salvation, for He who promised is faithful and will bring it to pass.
