MONDAY 1ST MAY, 2017 READ – Day: Mark 6:30-58; Night: Jug 3-4
THEME: GODLY CHARACTERISTICS
TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 2: 19 – 30
HYMN: EMHB 519 – There, Jesus, full of truth and grace
Paul gives two examples of people with godly character. He speaks of Timothy and Epaphroditus. Clearly, both men, in Paul’s estimation, were people of godly character. The question is this, “What kind of characteristics is God looking for in a person?” Of course God is looking for people with courage. Epaphroditus risked his life and almost died for the work of Christ (Philippians 2:30). God is looking for people who are not afraid to be different from the culture around them and to stand up for godly standards. God is looking for people with compassion (Philippians 2: 20 -21). You can be a success in everything else but if you do not have love in your life, you are a failure (1 Cor. 13:3).
The bottom line for a person of godly character is integrity. A person of integrity has nothing to hide. Is your private life consistent with your public image? Are you godly on Sunday but live like the devil the rest of the week? Are you a dove in church but a tiger in your home?
We live in a world that puts a lot of emphasis on possession or popularity. But God asks questions like: Is the person holy? Is he or she seeking to follow Me? Does he strive to be more like the One who laid down His life for him? Is she striving to be more like Jesus?
MEMORY VERSE: Proverbs 10:9 “He who walks with integrity walks securely, but he who perverts his way will become known.”
PRAYER: My Lord and my God, help me to grow and live like my Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
