FRIDAY 25TH AUGUST 2017 READ – DAY: 1 Cor 1; Night: Sos 1-4
THEME: GO TO ANY LENGTH FOR GOD
TEXT: ACTS 21: 8- 14
HYMN: EMHB578 – A CHARGE to keep I have.
On the first Sunday of every New Year, Methodists gather together to renew their covenant with God. As part of the covenant, each one of us is reminded “Christ has many services to be done. Some are easy, others are difficult; some bring honour, others bring reproach. Some are suitable to our natural inclination and temporal interest, others are contrary to both. In some, we may please Christ and ourselves. In other we cannot please Christ except we deny ourselves”
This reminder every year brings to the fore our calling and the duties we perform in God’s Vineyard. When these tasks are easy or bring honour, we are happy to be counted… However, like the early apostles, some of these tasks may require so much personal denial to our comfort and liberty. Most early Christians lost their lives while trying to spread the gospel. Most of the missionaries left their homes to spread the gospel to us. Some lost their lives. So, what is the cost of your calling? What price do you have to pay to serve God? As the words remind us, are we willing to serve when it is only convenient for us? Do we reject services that require efforts from us and demand sacrifice? Can you go to any length in your service for Christ? Remember that God who calls knows us and knows what we are able to do about what he had set before us. The power to do all these things is assuredly given us in Christ who strengthens us. His grace is sufficient for you.
MEMORY VERSE: Acts 21:13 Then Paul answered. ‘Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the Name of the Lord Jesus.’
PRAYER: God of my life, let Your Will always be done and not mine.
