TEXT:     1 JOHN 3:1-9

HYMN:  EMHB 554 – O come and dwell in me

A man in his early forties sent a text message to a Pastor who had impacted his life while he was growing up as a youth. It was a desperate cry for help. He had been living in sin for a while and realized how dangerous it was to continue on that path. He wanted urgent help. The difference between a believer and a non- believer when sin is concerned is that the believer gets convicted of sin by the Holy Spirit. This conviction leads to such cry for help as in the case referred to, followed by confession and repentance.

On the other hand, a non-believer relishes sin and turns deaf ears to any alarm bell that the Holy Spirit rings. When a person who professes to be a Christian indulges in habitual sin, self-examination is required for the person to confirm if, of a truth, his or her heart has been regenerated by the Holy Spirit. 1 John 3: 9 says “No one born of God commits sin, for God’s nature abides in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God”

By using the present active infinitive form of the verb ‘to sin’, John stresses that believers cannot continue to live in habitual sin. If, indeed, a person’s heart is regenerated, the new birth produces spiritual life which is in union with Christ through the Holy Spirit.  While believers may lapse into sin, they will never embrace it as a lifestyle.

MEMORY VERSE: 1John 3:4 “Everyone who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.”

PRAYER: Lord, please make my heart Your royal throne and give no room for the devil evermore.
