THEME: DO NOT FRET (PALM SUNDAY)
TEXT: PSALM 37:1-20
MEMORY VERSE: PSALM 37:1 “Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong.”
It was a rich procession on that first Palm Sunday when Jesus rode triumphantly to Jerusalem. Guess what he rode on? A colt and not a Horse. Today, we celebrate His humility and sacrificial lifestyle. He had all the riches of the world at His command, yet he did not show off by getting the best of horses, garments and adornments.
Going through the passage for today’s reflection, King David, the Psalmist, makes it clear that all the fortunes and wealth of evil-doers will end in this world. He makes a comparison of the evildoers’ wealth and those of the righteous ones. He commands us not to fret at the wealth of evildoers but to commit our ways unto God, trust in the Lord, do good, etc. He says because evildoers’ success terminates in this world, we should not marvel at their achievements. God has promised to preserve the righteous till eternity. The righteous, though grieved by ostentatious living of the wicked, shall have his/her desires granted by God.
There are many promises of God for the righteous in the Psalm such as inheritance of the earth, abundance of peace, salvation, etc, while evildoers will be cut off. Not one day’s work will go unrewarded with eternal joy for the righteous, but the wicked will perish with their loots. The evildoers’ weeping and wailing will be eternal.
Christian, do not be weary nor discomfited about the wealth amassed by the wicked; instead, be the light and salt of the world. The wicked may change their ways and turn to Christ if they see your good works. It is not sinful to be wealthy but such wealth must not be corruptly amassed. In fact, riches and honour are God’s (Prov. 8:18, 1 Chron. 29:12).
HYMN: MHB 669 – DEAR LORD AND FATHER OF MANKIND, FORGIVE OUR FOOLISH WAYS;
PRAYER: Eternal Father, don’t allow me to be envious at the wealth of the wicked but to cast all my cares on You because You care. Do these for me in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
