TEXT: MATT. 6: 1-13
1. Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. 2. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4. That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. 5. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. 9. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11. Give us this day our daily bread. 12. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
MESSAGE: This text explains to us one of Christ’s attitudes which differ from those of the hypocrites -the Pharisees and Sadducees. Jesus taught His disciples distinguishable character, not common, but highly acceptable to God. He pointed out that God loves to see in the secret in order to reward openly (Matt. 6 verses 4b and 6b), after a person has done the needful in secret. This implies that God has a secret place and that secret place affords a person God’s divine covering (Psalm 91:1). The secret place of God is highly potent, productive and fruitful. All we need to do is to discover it. When you pray, we are told to do so in our closets and when we give with our right hand, the left hand should not know! Unfortunately, some so-called Christians do not always like to give, if what they want to give is not properly announced. Some want to give in order to impress and to oppress others. In fact, the style in some Churches is to announce through the microphone the amount donated so that the congregation will applaud them. Beloved, as much as God loves a cheerful giver, He appreciates a secret giver by rewarding them openly. So also He makes a secret prayer productive. Do your charitable deed in secret and God will reward your labour of love openly. Also do your prayer in your secret chamber and God will answer openly. The only person that requires to be praised openly is God Almighty.
1. AND can it be that I should gain An interest in the Saviour’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! how can it be That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me
2.’TIs mystery all! The Immortal dies : Who can explore His strange design? In vain the first-born seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine. ‘TIs mercy all! let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more.
3.He left His Father’s throne above So free, so infinite His grace Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race. ‘Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me! 4.Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray— I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
5.No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine! Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach the eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ,my own.
MEMORY VERSE: MATTHEW 6: 4 “… that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.”
PRAYER: Lord, help me to do things for Thy glory and not mine in Jesus name. Amen.
