MONDAY 24TH JULY, 2017 READ – DAY: Act 6-7:1-16; Night: 1 Chro 16-17
THEME: COUNT IT ALL LOSS
TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 3: 1-11
HYMN: EMHB 182- When I survey the wondrous Cross.
The “Panama papers” scandal, which broke on April 3, 2016, were a leaked set of 11.5 Million confidential documents that provide detailed information about how wealthy individuals, including public officials, hid their assets from public scrutiny, ostensibly for reasons bordering on illegality, including fraud, money laundering and tax evasion.
Interestingly, it was also widely reported about the same time that billionaires Bill and Melinda Gate and Warren Buffet had started a Club named “the giving pledge”. The Club is a Billionaires’ Club with two requirements, be worth at least a Billion Dollars and be willing to give half of that away in your lifetime or in your will. Some of them have pledged to give away between 95 per cent and 99 per cent of their hard-earned net worth. While there should be no contention as to the common bond of altruism in the club, the goal of individual members might vary.
The Apostle Paul would give away all he had built up in life for one single goal: “that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and may share His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death that if possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead” (Phil 3:10-11). Paul’s goal involved a turning from his old ways, listening to God’s Word, being led by the Holy Spirit, responding to Him in truth and obedience, identifying with His concerns and sharing in Christ’s suffering by self-denial. This should be the goal of every-heavenly bound believer.
MEMORY VERSE: Philippians 3:8 “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord. For His sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ.”
PRAYER: Lord, help me to focus on heavenly and eternal things as opposed to earthly and temporal things in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
