SUNDAY 23RD JULY, 2017 READ – DAY: Act 6-7:1-16; Night: 1 Chro 16-17
THEME: CHRIST ATTITUDE
TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 2: 1-11
HYMN: EMHB 564 – Father, I dare believe
I was with a friend in his chauffeur- driven car when he started to reprimand the driver with what I considered abusive language. I later reflected on the incident and wondered how difficult it would be for my friend, a Pastor, to share the gospel with his driver and influence him in any positive way, if he (the driver) was not a Christian. I concluded that humility is of utmost importance to Christians as relational beings.
Paul, in Philippians 2:1-11, emphasizes how Jesus left His glory in Heaven and took on the human nature in humility, becoming obedient to death for the sake of others. We are humble when we acknowledge our own weaknesses and give credit to God and others for our accomplishments. We show humility in our relationship when we consider others more important than ourselves.
Jesus Christ has given us good example of how to be humble and that is why Paul charged that his attitude should be the same as that of Jesus Christ (Philip 2:5). The opposite of humility is pride and the Bible tells us that “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6)
Let us pray and ask for the mind of Christ.
MEMORY VERSE: Philippians 2:5 “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.”
PRAYER: Gracious and Merciful Jesus, help me to live the type of life You lived.
