THURSDAY 3RD AUGUST, 2017                                READ – DAY: Act 17; Night: 1 Kings 8

TEXT:     1 JOHN 4:20 – 21; 5:1 – 3

HYMN:  EMHB 435 – Love is the key of life and death

Our text for today also speaks about love. You may ask: “What kind of love? It is all about agape or divine love which all believers are expected to have. This love is the type that God shows us as example in John 3:16 which says  “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”.

It is surprising that many Christians who profess to be “believers” do many things that make one wonder if the person is, indeed, a Christian or a pagan. Some so-called “believers” still keep grudges against fellow believers though they go to Church and hear sermons on love every time. Yet, there is no love between the two Church members! Some say they love God but they hate some of their family members. Beloved Apostle John asks in 1 John 4:20: “If a man says ‘I love God’ but hates his brother, he is a liar; for he that loves not his brother whom he sees everyday, how can he love God whom he has not seen?” Apostle Paul gave 9 ingredients of divine love in 1 Cor. 13:4ff as patience, kindness, generosity, humility, courtesy, selflessness, good temper, righteousness and sincerity. Let us practise selfless love.

Families are often viewed as a unit, hence one can not love one member of a family while despising other members. God’s commandments had never been too heavy for those in whose hearts they had been written (Deut 30:11-14). Many Jewish teachers regarded some parts of the law as “heavier” or “weightier” than others (as in Matt 23:23), but they meant that some were more crucial for daily life, not that any of them was too hard to keep. In Colossians 3:23, the Bible says “And whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men”. Therefore, God’s love is the ultimate commandment.  If you love God keep His Sheep.

MEMORY VERSE: 1 John 5: “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome”.

PRAYER: All-loving God, give us the spirit to love one another as Jesus loves us.
