A GREAT CHALLENGE
TEXT:2 Cor 8:1-16
Memory Verse: 2 Cor 9:7 “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
We came into the world with nothing and it is certain we shall carry no physical object out of it. We came into the world to meet the resources God has made in advance of our birth. Destiny places some of these resources in our charge while our journey lasted in the world, and we shall ultimately give the account of our stewardship in the management of the resources that come our way.
Our God is not hostile, like the wicked and lazy servant described his boss in one of the parables told by our Lord Jesus Christ. He is not a taskmaster that would want to reap where He did not sow but He demands that we honour Him with our resources, at least, those resources that are put in our care while our lives lasts. The resources in this regard may not alone be monetary but also material and intellectual. All things come from God and when we give back to Him, we are doing much good to our lives. Giving is a form of worship.
But there is a great challenge in man’s disposition to giving back to God. Some of us think we are doing God a favour when we pay our tithes, offerings, vows, pledges etc. We behave like children that would be given a piece of biscuit by the parent and when the parent asks them to give her/him a part, they refuse. Is the father or mother asking for the biscuit from the child because he/she cannot afford it? Definitely not. But it will gladden the heart of the parent when the child willingly gives what is demanded. It gives him an impression that the child is appreciative of the giver.
There is a noticeable lack in many of our churches today because the culture of giving is lacking in many respects. Prophet Malachi likened the behaviour to outright robbery Malachi 3:8. We must give to God and His work sacrificially. There must be sufficient ‘Bread’ in the house of the Lord. The benefits of giving to God are immense (Mal 3:10). But beyond the physical and spiritual blessings that go with giving, we should give as a mark of our love for God.
Conclusively, sing the hymn 399- What shall I render to my God, for all His mercy’s stone?
PRAYER: O Lord, the generous Giver of all blessings in this world, grant me abundance of your resources and a liberal heart to dispense them for Your glory. Amen.
